Mat Stein is the author of the popular books When Technology Fails and When Disaster Strikes. These books are indispensable reference guides to preparedness. Covering food storage, water purification, health without doctors, communication, self-defense, and much more, Stein’s books explain the whys and hows of preparing to survive the loss of such civilized amenities as electrical power, water and sewage utilities, state-imposed law-and-order, grocery stores, and so on. Even if you were to lose these amenities for just a few days, as commonly happens in cases of mega-storms and earthquakes, you’d be happy to have read these books and followed their advice. And if Stein’s prognoses in The Perfect Storm are correct…well, don’t say we didn’t warn you.
Hi Kevin, Fantastic show today! Had a good laugh at your mention of Loma Prieta. I, lived around the corner from a PG & E substation in San Rafael. My, power "blinked out" for a few seconds, and I remember standing in my, living room, one hand on a tall glass-doored bookcase, the other on my, computer CRT atop a three drawer file cabinet next to my desk, and, basically 'surfing' between them, holding them up during the quake, to, keep them from toppling into each other. My neighbor was working on his, clutch at the time, under a souped up Mustang that he'd just put high up, on four jack stands. It didn't come down, so that was lucky. The other, thing I remember clearly is my cable staying on. I started channel, 'surfing' immediately. All the local stations were down except, within, a couple of minutes, KRON came back on using a generator (audible) and, a 'field camera' from one of their vans plus what appeared to be a, bunch of flashlights to supplement the building's emergency lighting., Ah, memories …, Anyway, immensely enjoyed getting caught up on Lenny and INN. Hope, something comes through for them. After hearing him today, my take on, Matthew Stein is that he's absolutely on top of what's going on in the, world today. There are just too many mutually reinforcing and converging, vectors arriving from all different directions to be denied. I'm, writing about the empirically measurable stuff. In that lecture series, I sent you by Ronald Wright, he uses a phrase along the lines of 'the, dark side of our Earth glowing like hot, angry embers'.
